This is an illustration for a resident individual. It uses the new regime slabs for tax year 2026-27 and does not include surcharge, special-rate income such as capital gains, or the old regime. Tax rules change with every Budget, so check the current rules on incometax.gov.in.
How this is calculated
Salaried people first take off the 75,000 rupee standard deduction. The rest is taxed in slabs: nil up to 4 lakh rupees, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% in 4 lakh steps, and 30% above 24 lakh. If taxable income is 12 lakh rupees or less, a rebate cancels the tax. Just above 12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from being more than the income above 12 lakh. Then 4% health and education cess is added.
A worked example
Illustration: a salary of 14 lakh rupees.
- Taxable income: 14 lakh minus 75,000 = 13.25 lakh rupees.
- Slab tax: 20,000 + 40,000 + 18,750 = 78,750 rupees. No rebate, since it is above 12 lakh.
- Add 4% cess of 3,150 rupees: 81,900 rupees a year, about 6,825 rupees a month.
