Deposits Interest
Year-wise balance
Deposits run for the first 15 years. From year 16 to 21, no deposits are needed and the balance keeps earning interest.
| Year | Girl's age | Deposit | Interest | Balance |

This is an illustration. It assumes each year's deposits are made by 5 April and the same rate for all 21 years. In reality the government can change the rate every quarter, and monthly deposits earn slightly less. Check the current rate and rules with India Post or your bank.
How this is calculated
Under the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019, interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and added to the account at the end of each financial year. The calculator assumes one deposit at the start of each financial year for 15 years, compounds the balance yearly, and carries on compounding with no deposits until year 21.
A worked example
Illustration at 8.2% a year, deposited by 5 April each year:
- 1.5 lakh rupees a year: you put in ₹22.5 lakh over 15 years, and it matures at about ₹71,82,119.
- 500 rupees a month (6,000 a year): it matures at about ₹2,87,285.
- 1,000 rupees a month (12,000 a year): it matures at about ₹5,74,570.
The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. The deposits also count towards the deduction long known as Section 80C, now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, but only if you file under the old tax regime.

Questions people ask
How much will I get from Sukanya Samriddhi (SSY me kitna paisa milega)?
It depends on what you deposit and the rate. In the illustration on this page at 8.2%, the full 1.5 lakh rupees a year for 15 years grows to about ₹71.8 lakh at maturity. 500 rupees a month grows to about ₹2.87 lakh, and 1,000 rupees a month to about ₹5.75 lakh. The rate is reviewed every quarter, so the real figure will differ.
For how many years do I deposit, and when does it mature?
Under the scheme rules, you deposit for 15 years from the date you open the account, between 250 rupees and 1.5 lakh rupees each financial year. The account then keeps earning interest with no deposits and matures 21 years from opening. The year-wise table above shows both stages.
Why does another SSY calculator show a different amount?
Calculators assume different deposit dates. This one assumes each year's deposit is made by 5 April, so it earns interest for the full year, which gives the highest result. Depositing monthly or later in the year earns a little less. The rate you enter also changes the answer a lot over 21 years.
Can I withdraw before maturity?
Up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year can be withdrawn for the girl's education once she turns 18 or passes class 10. The account can also be closed early for her marriage after 18. Check the current rules with India Post or your bank before relying on this.
