YearDepositInterestBalance

This is an illustration. It assumes the same deposit made on or before 5 April every year and the same rate for the whole period. In reality the government can change the rate every quarter, so your final amount will differ. Check the current rate and rules on the Ministry of Finance or India Post site.

How this is calculated

PPF interest is worked out monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and added to the account once a year, at the end of March. The calculator assumes one deposit at the start of each financial year, so each year's balance plus the new deposit earns a full year's interest, compounded yearly.

A worked example

Illustration at 7.1% a year, deposited on or before 5 April each year:

  • 1.5 lakh rupees a year for 15 years: you put in ₹22.5 lakh and it grows to about ₹40,68,209.
  • 50,000 rupees a year for 15 years grows to about ₹13,56,070.
  • Keep depositing 1.5 lakh a year for 25 years, with two extensions, and it reaches about ₹1.03 crore.

The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. Your deposits also count towards the deduction long known as Section 80C, now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, but only if you file under the old tax regime.

Questions people ask

How much will I get from PPF in 15 years (PPF me 15 saal me kitna milega)?

It depends on what you put in each year and the rate. In the illustration on this page, the full 1.5 lakh rupees a year for 15 years at 7.1% grows to about ₹40,68,209: ₹22.5 lakh of your own money and about ₹18.18 lakh of tax-free interest. The government can change the rate every quarter, so the real figure will differ.

When should I deposit in PPF to earn the most?

PPF interest for each month is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of that month. A deposit made on or before 5 April earns interest for the whole financial year, which is what this calculator assumes. Depositing later in the year earns less.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

It is 7.1% a year for October to December 2026. The government reviews it every three months, so confirm the current rate on the Ministry of Finance or India Post site.

Can I continue PPF after 15 years?

Yes. When the account matures, you can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. Pick 20 or 25 years above to see the effect of extending while you keep depositing. Check the current extension rules before you decide.
