Insurance Figures verified 2026-10-31

Example. After three years with one insurer, you port to another and the three years already served on waiting periods carry over.

Portability lets you change health insurers without starting your waiting periods again. The credits move with you, to the extent of your sum insured. How to port, step by step: health insurance portability. Read the other buyer rules in our health insurance guide.

Questions people ask

What is portability in health insurance?

It is the right to switch your health policy from one insurer to another. Per IRDAI's 2024 master circular, you carry over credits to the extent of your sum insured: no claim bonus, specific waiting periods, the pre-existing disease waiting period and the 60-month clock.

How long does porting take?

Under the 2024 master circular, your old insurer must share your details within 72 hours of the request, and the new insurer must decide within 5 days of getting them.

Do I lose my waiting periods if I port?

No, the time you've served carries over, as long as there is no break in cover. That's why porting is usually done at renewal.
