Sum insured

The most a health or general insurance policy will pay in a year.

Example. On a 10 lakh sum insured, that is the maximum the policy pays for the year.

The sum insured is the ceiling on what your policy pays in a policy year. If your bills cross it, you pay the rest. Pick a sum insured that matches real treatment costs where you live, not a round number, because a figure that is too low leaves you exposed to the big bill you bought cover for.

Questions people ask

What does sum insured mean?

It is the maximum your health or general insurance policy will pay in a policy year. Costs above it come out of your own pocket.

How much sum insured do I need?

Enough to cover a serious hospital stay at today's prices in your city, not a round number. In metros, medical inflation means older policies can quickly look too small.
