How to check your PF balance: the online, app and SMS ways

Your UAN lets you see your PF balance online, in the UMANG app, or by SMS

Your EPF grows quietly every month, and it is worth checking a few times a year. All you need is an activated UAN, the 12-digit number on your salary slip. If you have never activated it, do that first with our UAN activation guide.

Three ways to check your PF balance. Online, on the EPFO member passbook. In the UMANG app, under EPFO services. By SMS, from your registered mobile.

Way 1: the EPFO passbook, online. Log in with your UAN and password on the EPFO member passbook service. You will see every monthly deposit, your share and your employer’s, the interest credited, and the running balance, for each job you have had.

Way 2: the UMANG app. Install the government’s UMANG app, open EPFO services, and choose View Passbook. Log in with your UAN and the OTP sent to your registered mobile. It shows the same passbook on your phone.

Way 3: by SMS. From the mobile number registered with your UAN, send this to 7738299899:

EPFOHO your UAN ENG

For example, EPFOHO 1XXXXXXXXXXX ENG, with your own 12-digit UAN in place of the Xs. Replace ENG with another language code if you prefer. EPFO replies with your latest balance and last contribution.

Way 4: a missed call. Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile, and EPFO sends your balance by SMS. The SMS and missed-call details are as listed on EPFO’s member passbook site in October 2026; service numbers can change.

Did you know? Your passbook is also a check on your employer. Both your share and your employer’s should appear every month. A gap of several months can mean the money was cut from your salary but not deposited. Raise it with HR first, and if that does not fix it, file a grievance with EPFO.

What to check each time. A quick look at three things catches most problems.

What to check in your PF passbook. Every month's deposit is there. Both your share and your employer's share appear. Your name, date of birth and nominee are correct.

  • Every month is there. No gaps in the deposits.
  • Both shares appear. Yours and your employer’s.
  • Your details are right. Name, date of birth and nominee. Wrong details can hold up a withdrawal later.

Why the balance can look behind. Monthly deposits may take time to show. The year’s interest is credited after EPFO declares the rate, which can be months after the financial year ends. So a passbook in, say, July may not yet show last year’s interest.

The takeaway. With an activated UAN, you can see your PF balance online, in UMANG, or by SMS in minutes. Check that every month is there and both shares appear, and fix wrong details early. Planning to take money out? Read the 2026 PF withdrawal rules first.

Questions people ask

How can I check my PF balance by SMS?

From the mobile number registered with your UAN, send EPFOHO, a space, your UAN, a space, and a language code such as ENG, to 7738299899. For example: EPFOHO 1XXXXXXXXXXX ENG, with your own 12-digit UAN in place of the Xs. EPFO replies with your latest balance. Your UAN must be activated and linked to your KYC for this to work.

Can I check my PF balance without UAN?

Not really. Every EPFO balance service, online, in the app or by SMS, works through your UAN. If you do not know it, it is printed on your salary slip, or your employer's HR team can give it to you. Then activate it before checking.

Why is my PF balance not updated?

Your employer deposits contributions every month, but the passbook may take some time to show them. The year's interest is added after it is declared and credited, which can be months after the financial year ends. If several months are missing, ask your employer whether they deposited the money.
