Why the first few bars are zero
Under the new regime for 2026-27, a rebate cancels the tax on taxable income up to 12 lakh rupees. With the 75,000 rupee standard deduction, a salaried person earning up to about 12.75 lakh rupees pays no income tax at all. Above that, the rebate stops and tax applies on the whole taxable income. Questions people ask
Is a 12 lakh rupee salary tax-free under the new regime?
For tax year 2026-27, yes. A rebate cancels the tax on taxable income up to 12 lakh rupees, and the 75,000 rupee standard deduction stretches that to a salary of about 12.75 lakh rupees. Above that, tax applies on the whole taxable income, not just the part over 12 lakh.
How is income tax on a salary worked out in the new regime?
Take off the 75,000 rupee standard deduction, then apply the slabs: nil up to 4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% in 4 lakh steps, and 30% above 24 lakh. If taxable income is 12 lakh or less, a rebate cancels the tax. Then 4% cess is added.
Does this chart include surcharge or the old regime?
No. It shows the new regime for a resident individual, without surcharge, which applies on incomes above 50 lakh rupees. For your own figure, including the old regime comparison, use the income tax calculator.
