What the NISM V-A certificate actually is

The exam every mutual fund distributor must pass

What it is. The NISM Series V-A Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination. Anyone selling or distributing mutual funds in India needs it, including individual distributors and employees of asset management companies working in sales and distribution.

The facts, from NISM. The fee is ₹1500, with payment gateway charges on top. The test runs 120 minutes and has 100 questions carrying 100 marks. You need 50 percent to pass. There is no negative marking, so leaving an answer blank never beats guessing.

How long it lasts. Three years.

The condition people trip on. NISM issues the passing certificate only to candidates who have furnished or updated their PAN in their registration details. Passing is not enough on its own.

What it is not. It is not an investment adviser licence, and it does not let you manage anyone’s money. It certifies that you can distribute mutual funds.

GreenFunds is not affiliated with NISM or SEBI. We prepare people for this exam; only NISM conducts it and only NISM certifies anyone.

What the exam covers. Twelve units spanning the investment landscape, how a fund is structured, the regulatory framework, scheme documents, distribution practice, NAV and pricing, taxation, risk and performance, scheme selection and investor services. The weighting is uneven, so scheme selection and investor services carry far more marks than fund structure does.

Why no negative marking changes your strategy. Every blank is a guaranteed zero and every guess has a one in four chance. Leaving anything unanswered is strictly worse than attempting it, which is not true of every exam people have sat before.

What comes after. The certificate is one piece. Distributors also need an ARN from AMFI and to complete know your distributor requirements before they can actually sell. Passing the exam is the gate, not the whole road.

This is general education, not financial advice. Figures are as reported by the source and may change.
