Example. A caller says they are from your bank's fraud team and asks you to read out the OTP to 'block a suspicious payment'. That is vishing.

Questions people ask

What is vishing?

Vishing, short for voice phishing, is a scam done over a phone call. The caller pretends to be from your bank, a payment app, a delivery company, the police or a government office, and uses urgency or fear to get your OTP, PIN, card details or a payment.

How is vishing different from phishing and smishing?

They are the same trick on different channels. Phishing usually means a fake email or link, smishing is a fake SMS, and vishing is a fake phone call. All of them try to get you to hand over details or money by pretending to be someone you trust.

How do I protect myself from vishing calls?

Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password on a call, whoever the caller claims to be. Hang up and call back on a number from the official app or the back of your card. You can report a suspected fraud call on the government's Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
