Stock-picking

Hand-choosing which company shares to buy, hoping to beat the overall market.

Investing

Example. An active fund manager does stock-picking; an index fund does not.

Stock-picking means choosing individual company shares to buy and sell by hand, in the hope of doing better than the market as a whole. It takes research, judgment and time, which is the job an active fund manager is paid for.

What it involves

A stock-picker studies companies, their businesses, finances, management and prospects, and tries to buy the ones that will do well and avoid the ones that will not. Done seriously, it is a full-time craft requiring data, skill and discipline. It is the opposite of simply owning the whole market: instead of accepting the average, you are betting you can beat it by choosing better than everyone else.

Why it is hard

The uncomfortable truth is that most people, professionals included, do not beat the market by picking stocks over the long run, as the SPIVA scorecard shows. Prices already reflect what is widely known, so a genuine edge is rare, and mistakes, plus the cost of frequent trading, add up. For a beginner, concentrating money in a few hand-picked shares is closer to a bet than an investment.

The simpler path

An index fund skips stock-picking entirely and holds a slice of every big company, which is why it costs far less than an active fund that pays for the picking. For most people, owning the market cheaply beats trying to outguess it. See active vs passive investing.
