Questions people ask

What is a SIM swap?

A SIM swap is when your mobile operator issues a new SIM card for your existing number. It is normal when you lose a phone, but scammers abuse it by pretending to be you. Once they hold the new SIM, your old one stops working and your calls, SMS and OTPs go to them.

What is the first sign of a SIM swap fraud?

Usually your phone suddenly shows no signal for a long time, for no clear reason. A message about a SIM change you did not ask for, or bank alerts stopping, are other signs. Call your operator and bank from another phone straight away.

Is there any protection against SIM swap fraud in India?

Yes. A Department of Telecommunications instruction bars SMS on a new SIM for 24 hours after a swap or replacement, and TRAI rules stop the number being ported within 7 days of a swap. These slow scammers down but do not replace your own quick action. Check your operator for the current rules.
