Making charges
What a jeweller charges to craft a piece, on top of the gold's value; not regulated and varies by shop.
Making charges are what a jeweller adds for crafting a piece, on top of the value of the gold in it. They aren’t regulated, they vary by shop and design, and you rarely get them back when you sell. Ask for them on a separate line of the bill, next to the hallmark details. More in gold hallmark and HUID.
Questions people ask
What are making charges on gold?
The jeweller's charge for designing and crafting the piece, added on top of the gold's value. It is usually a percentage of the gold value or a rate per gram, and it varies by shop and design.
Do I get making charges back when I sell gold?
Usually not. When you sell or exchange jewellery, it is generally valued on its gold content, so the making charges you paid are largely lost. That is one reason gold ETFs and gold funds, which have no making charges, are used for investment.
