Questions people ask
What is Form 26AS?
Form 26AS is an annual tax statement linked to your PAN. From assessment year 2023-24, it shows only tax deducted or collected at source, per the Income Tax Department. Other details sit in the AIS.
Why should I check Form 26AS?
Because you can claim credit only for tax that shows up against your PAN. If your employer or bank cut tax but it's missing from the statement, ask them to correct their filing before you file.
Is Form 26AS changing?
For income from April 2026, the new tax rules use new form numbers, and the annual statement is widely reported as Form 168. Check the income tax portal for the current name and layout.
