Foreclosure
Also called Pre-closure
Paying off a loan in full before its tenure ends.
Foreclosure is closing a loan early by paying everything you owe. It saves the interest you would have paid on the remaining months. For many individual floating-rate loans, RBI rules now bar any charge for it; for fixed-rate loans, check your Key Fact Statement. See car loan basics for an example.
Questions people ask
What is foreclosure of a loan?
Foreclosure means closing a loan by paying the full outstanding amount before the planned end date. Part-prepayment means paying a lump sum to reduce it without closing it.
Are there charges for foreclosing a loan?
It depends. Under RBI directions for loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, lenders cannot charge for prepaying, in part or in full, a floating-rate loan taken by an individual for non-business use. For other loans, such as many fixed-rate loans, the lender's policy applies, and the charge must be disclosed in your loan papers and Key Fact Statement.
What should I collect when I foreclose a loan?
Ask for a closure letter or no-dues certificate. For a car loan, also get the lender's no-objection letter so you can clear the lender's name from your RC.
