Example. A 1% processing fee on a 5 lakh rupee loan costs 5,000 rupees upfront (illustration).

A processing fee is the one-time charge for setting up a loan. It’s easy to overlook because it’s small next to the loan, but it raises the real cost of borrowing. Always compare loans on APR, which counts fees, not on the interest rate alone.

Questions people ask

What is a processing fee on a loan?

It's a one-time charge the lender takes for handling and setting up your loan. It is often a percentage of the loan amount, and it's often cut from the money you receive.

Does the processing fee change the real cost of a loan?

Yes. Two loans with the same interest rate can cost different amounts if their fees differ. That's why the APR in the Key Fact Statement, which includes fees, is the better number to compare.

Can a lender add a fee that was not disclosed?

Under RBI's Key Facts Statement rules, a charge not mentioned in the KFS cannot be levied during the loan without your explicit consent.
