Gross total income is all your income for the tax year, added up across every source: salary, house property, business, capital gains and other sources like interest. It’s the number your deductions come off, and the starting point for your tax. See how it’s built in how your salary is taxed and income from other sources.

Questions people ask

What is gross total income?

It's the sum of your income for the tax year under every head: salary, house property, business or profession, capital gains, and income from other sources such as interest. Old-regime deductions like 80C are then subtracted to reach your taxable income.

Is FD interest part of gross total income?

Yes. Interest from savings accounts and fixed deposits counts as income from other sources and is added to your gross total income, then taxed at your slab rate.
