Your UPI PIN is never for receiving money
A PIN sends money, it never receives it
The one rule. Your UPI PIN is how you pay. You enter it to send money out of your account, never to bring money in. If anyone, a buyer, a “customer care” agent, or a stranger with a refund, asks you to enter your PIN or scan a QR code to receive money, it is a scam. Full stop.
How the trick works. UPI has a feature called a “collect request”, where someone can request money from you. Scammers abuse it. They tell you they are sending money, then fire a collect request at your app. The screen asks you to approve and enter your PIN. If you do, you are not receiving anything. You are approving a payment out of your own account.
Where it shows up. The common versions:
- Selling something online. The “buyer” insists on paying first, then sends a request to “confirm” or “receive” the money.
- A fake refund or cashback. “Just enter your PIN to get your ₹2,000 back.”
- A QR code sent to you “to receive” money. Scanning a QR and entering a PIN always pays out, never in.
How you actually receive money. To get paid, you share your UPI ID, or you let the other person scan your QR code. That is all. No PIN, no approval from you. If money is truly coming to you, it lands with nothing more than that.
If you already entered your PIN. The money may have left your account. Move fast, the first hour matters most. Call 1930 and file on cybercrime.gov.in. The full steps are here: how to report a UPI fraud.
Stay safe, the short version. Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone, not even someone claiming to be your bank. Read what the app screen actually says, paying versus receiving, before you tap. And hold on to the one rule: a PIN sends money, it never receives it.
